Estates Update

As you know we in the Estates Team love our buildings, so much so that we love climbing on roofs. This is done safely and in accordance with 'Working at Height' regulations. Each year we ensure we undertake roofing projects. Overall, our roofs are like the forth road bridge, once we get to the end of replacing all our roofs in approx 20 year we will start again.

This summer the Estates Team undertook £572k worth of roof works across five WeST Sites:

  • Buckfastleigh – £146k
  • South Dartmoor - £310k phase 1 of a 3 phase roof improvement programme.
  • Coombe Dean - £71k.
  • ICC - £15k
  • Oreston - £30k.

Each project has seen the complete refurbishment of the roofs with a bituminous waterproofing system including improvements to insulation/ thermal performance, removal of redundant equipment and defective roof lights. The refurbishments have greatly improved the overall condition of the buildings, addressing significant drainage, ponding and saturation defects.  The finish that has been achieved is the of the highest level and the 20-year warranty has been received. With improved insulation on the new roofs, due to either there being no insulation previously or it had become wet and ineffective. The new roofs reduce our heat leakage in the winter and reduced heat gain in the summer, meaning carbon generation through reduced heating is much reduced making our building more sustainable.
