Let's begin by addressing a topic that's been making headlines recently—children's attendance. At the outset of this year, we made attendance a priority across our trust, and I'm pleased to report that our concerted efforts are yielding positive results. As of Friday May 3, our WeST Primary Schools attendance figure is 95.8%, slightly surpassing the national primary average of 94.9%. While our WeST Secondary Schools have a collective figure of 90.7%, slightly below the national secondary average of 91.2%, there's still room for significant improvement. We cannot overstate the importance of excellent attendance, and we'll delve deeper into this in the coming weeks.

Amidst our ongoing recruitment efforts, I'm thrilled to announce some recent leadership appointments within our trust:

  • Naveed Khan has been appointed as Director of Education (Secondary), commencing on September 1, 2024. We eagerly anticipate his induction into the WeST family.
  • Yasmin Atkinson joins WeST as Deputy Headteacher of Sherford Vale School, also starting on September 1, 2024. This exciting appointment coincides with the near-completion of Sherford Vale's 'second wing,' enabling the school to operate a two-form entry structure to meet the needs of the growing community.
  • Nichola Offer has been appointed as Deputy Principal at Ivybridge Community College, creating a vacancy at Plymstock School for the post of Deputy Headteacher. The recruitment campaign for this pivotal role is now underway.

This week, we've been busy with inspections, hosting two simultaneous inspections on Wednesday alone! Firstly, as a delivery partner of Ambition Institute's NPQ offer, we facilitated an on-site inspection of our delivery component — an integral part of Ambition Institute's national inspection. Congratulations to Amy and the team, and a heartfelt thank you to all involved in the interviews. Additionally, Eggbuckland Community College hosted a two-day inspection. Well done to Heather and the ECC team.

Finally, with the public examination season now in full swing, our Year 11 students have commenced their GCSE examinations, with today seeing our entire cohort sitting a science GCSE — primarily Biology. Next week, our Year 6 cohort will embark on their KS2 SATs.

We extend our sincerest wishes of success to all students undertaking examinations and formal assessments. May your hard work and efforts be rewarded abundantly come summertime.

Best wishes,

Rob Haring

CEO
