As we anticipate the May Bank Holiday weekend, let's also hold onto the hope for sunnier skies and a chance to recharge away from the school routine.

We eagerly await the official joining of NCLT schools into the WeST family on June 1st, 2024, fostering greater collaboration and opportunities for all.

With just days left until Year 11 students begin their GCSE examinations on May 9th, we extend our best wishes for success, particularly as they embark on their first science GCSE examination in Biology on May 10th.

As previously mentioned in the 'Weekly Whistle', our recruitment efforts are in full swing. Explore the vacancies and opportunities available within WeST on MyNewTerm.

Wishing everyone a refreshing and enjoyable May Bank Holiday weekend.

Best wishes,

Rob Haring

Stress Awareness Month

WeST would like to continue to highlight some further materials available to you as valued colleagues. Stress is the body’s response when it senses danger, we all experience stress and need it to function but when stress interferes with our lives, it becomes a problem. Too much stress, for too long can make us ill. If unaddressed, stress can cause mental health issues like depression or anxiety and harm our physical health.

Stress can be personal or can be professional, however at times in our lives it is important to know what triggers and strategies may support us. Why not try a weekly wellbeing check-up to keep in touch with your mental health:

Wellness Action Plan

Wellness Action Plans are an easy, practical way of helping you support your own mental health at work and are designed for anyone in employment or a voluntary role. A Wellness Action Plan helps you to identify what keeps you well at work, what causes you to become unwell and how best to address a mental health problem at work. It also helps to open up a dialogue with your manager, in order for them to understand your needs and ultimately support your mental health.

If you would like to download a copy of the Wellness Action Plan, please visit the Staff Portal and for further information please contact the HR team via hr@westst.org.uk

Deaf Awareness Week

Deaf Awareness week takes place between 6 – 12 May 2024 and aims to promote greater awareness and understanding of challenges faced by the d/Deaf community in accessing communication. Each deaf person is different and the level of hearing loss, communication method and use of technology can vary.

Here are some top tips to become more Deaf Aware:

  • Make sure you have the persons attention before you start speaking to them.
  • Use your normal speaking volume. Shouting or accentuating lip patterns can make it hard to lip read.
  • Stand or sit in a place with good lighting. If you’re teaching try not to stand in-front of a projector or window, this can cause a shadow in front of your face again making it harder to lip read.
  • Learn how each d/Deaf person communicates, some will lipread others will use British Sign Language (BSL).

Eggbuckland Community College have a provision for d/Deaf students called the Hearing Support Centre. If you would like to learn more about deafness and Deaf Awareness please feel free to contact Charlotte Beardow-Jones (Teacher of the Deaf) / Sarah Gillan (Admin Assistant / Co-coordinator) at hsc@eggbuckland.com
