Are you looking to develop your career working with children and young people?

The Learning Institute offers a range of foundation degree courses that could be your next step towards a developing your career working with children and young people. These foundation degrees are accredited by the University of Worcester and delivered locally in venues across the south of England, including Plymouth, Exeter and Roche. We’re currently accepting applications for a September 2023 start.

The current foundation degrees - Early Years Professional, Inclusive Education, Learning and Education, and Mental Health and Wellbeing of Children and Young People - are delivered using a blended learning approach, with sessions taking place once a week (between 1pm and 7.30pm), either live online or face-to-face.

These courses are designed to fit around your existing work and family commitments. Alongside their studies, students will be working or volunteering with children and young people, enabling them to gain valuable insight and experience.  It also means students can continue to earn while they learn.

On completion of a foundation degree, students can apply for The Learning Institute’s top-up degree, BA (Hons) Advancing Practice, also accredited by the University of Worcester. This degree offers four pathways linked to working with children and young people, and it can be used as a stepping stone to further postgraduate study, including teacher training or a master’s degree.

Staff Wellbeing

Feedback from the staff survey identified that 71% of respondents know where to go if their wellbeing is being impacted by work, this is a decrease on previous years surveys and indicates this as an area to highlight further.

WeST supports all staff members with their wellbeing and as a colleague you can access:

  • Care First Employee Assistance Programme
  • Able Futures
  • Financial support via the Money and Pensions Service
  • Eye care vouchers
  • Seasonal Flu Vouchers
  • Medigold Occupational Health services

If you have any concerns and are unsure where to go or what your next step should be, please speak to your line manager who can help support you. Alternatively, if you are a Union member you can also make use of Union related support.

Following on from feedback the Staff Portal will be developed further, to ensure that the wellbeing section is clearly highlighted and easily accessible.
